Insulation Services Case Studies: Cold Floors Over Crawl Space in Ashburn, VA
This older home in Ashburn, VA was built entirely over a crawl space. Cold air was entering the crawl space and making the floors above very cold - especially in the extreme arctic blast we were having! The homeowner also wanted to make the house more efficient and keep the heat in longer. We used spray foam insulation to "encapsulate" the attic too.
Comfenergy was called in to solve this problem by "encapsulating" the crawl space. This entails turning the crawl space into a finished space or "conditioned" area. The Batt insulation on the crawl ceiling is disposed of, and TerraBlock foam insulation in installed on the dirt floor of the crawl.
CleanSpace 20 mil thick anti-microbial vapor barrier is then laid over top of the TerraBlock. Finally, the entire exterior of the crawl (including rim joists) are sprayed with foam insulation. Now the crawl space is heated by the space above and the floor stays warm.

This beautiful Ashburn home was cold, drafty, and had high energy bills.
Picture of the dirt floor crawl space before we began working.
Comfenergy production crew hard at work.
Look how tight the crawl space is... not fun, but someone has to do it!!!
Crawl space after the work has been done. Spray foam on the walls, and Clean Space on the floors.
Look how nice this is now. Looks good, but even better it makes the floors above warmer and less drafty.
The attic being insulated with foam spray. The gable end of the attic is also insulated as it now becomes an exterior wall....
The Comfenergy crew starting on the attic decking with foam spray.
Notice how well the items in the attic have been protected with plastic.
On to the other side of the roof deck. Foam Spray will stick to the roof deck and keep this house tightly insulated.
More foam spray in the attic. When we finish this house will be tight and very energy efficient.
