Challenge

This Falls Church, VA homeowner suffered from a cold room above the garage. This is VERY common in many of the homes we evaluate. Some are easier than others to figure out. This home happened to be just the garage ceiling creating the issue. The home was built with fiberglass batts and the batts fall away from the subflooring above.

Any little air gap between the subflooring above and the fiberglass batts will make the floors above cold. The thermal and air barriers need to touch one another for insulation to work!!!

Solution

Comfenergy put a prescription together to densley pack the garage ceiling with TruSoft cellulose insulation.

Unfortunately the joists in this home went front to back in the garage ceiling, and not side to side.....thus, making us cut drywall to access the air gaps above the garage ceiling.

The rooms above the garage in this Falls Church, VA home were cold during the winter months.

Comfenergy protected the items in the garage before cutting the ceiling of the garage to access air gaps above the fiberglass insulation.

Fiberglass DOES NOT stop air from travelling. It DOES NOT create an air barrier. Proof of this is the darker colored fiberglass in the picture. The fiberglass is filtering the dirt out of the air as it travels past.

Check out the air gaps between the fiberglass batts and the sub-flooring above! HOLY COW!! No wonder this place was cold.

Comfenergy inserting the hose between the sub-flooring and the fiberglass batts. We will fill this cavity with densely packed TruSoft cellulose insulation. Now the floors above will be warm!!!
