Insulation Services Case Studies: Cold Basement-Martinsburg, WV

Challenge

This Martinsburg, WV homeowner was tired of having to bundle up just to do their laundry in the winter.  The basement was almost 15 degrees colder than the first floor!!!  Mike Estrada with Comfenergy performed a full comfort evaluation to find two main things: 

1. The basement rim joists leaked cold air in terribly!

2. The basement walls were below grade and not even insulated at all.

Solution

Comfenergy sealed the air leaks with a closed cell spray foam to a thickness of about 3" (R20).  Then we insulated the walls by using fire resistant (per code) 2" thick, Thermax panels.  They were all cut to size and installed using spray foam and anchors.

Now this Martinsburg, WV homeowner can use the basement all year round.
