This Catharpin, VA homeowner was looking for a way to make their top floor cooler in the summer. There were many issues, but not too many for Comfenergy to handle. Lots of knee-walls and can lights were allowing hot attic air into the house too.
Solution
Comfenergy solved the issues with a combination of solutions: spray foam on vertical walls adjacent to living space, covering and sealing can lights, air sealing holes and gaps in the attic, and laying down a nice fresh layer of R60 cellulose insulation.

Can light are a HUGE source of air leakage - they allow the cold air out of your home and the hot attic air in, making the top floor hot and wasting energy that YOU are paying for.
Can lights are covered for two main reasons. 1. Keep flammable insulation away from the hot can light. 2. Stopping air leakage in the home.
Vertical walls were then sprayed with closed cell spray foam to keep hot air from radiating through to the top floor.
The final product. This homeowner can now sleep comfortably at night and save money while doing it!
