Insulation Services Case Studies: Winchester Attic Upgraded to R49
Challenge
This home in Winchester, VA was having year-round comfort issues: too hot/humid in the summer, too cold/drafty in the winter. The energy bills were frustratingly high because the HVAC system was working overtime and still not improving the conditions of the home! The problem was coming from the attic. The insulation was outdated and damaged, and there were many air leakage areas that needed to be sealed.
Solution
Our team first removed the old batt insulation and disposed of it. After that was out of the way, we could access the penetration points. We air sealed all leakage points with polyurethane. This included the areas around light fixtures. Once the attic was fully air sealed, we blew in cellulose insulation to R49. Now, the attic is fully sealed and properly insulated to keep the home comfortable and efficient in all seasons.
