Challenge

These Leesburg, VA homeowners called Comfenergy to inspect their attic. They had recently moved in and the home inspector suggested an inspection by an insulation company to see if the home insulation needed to be deeper.

Solution

During our inspection we found a myriad of issues: Completely bare spots of drywall in the attic leading to hot/cold spots below, air gaps in the tops of walls big enough to drop pennies through to the hollow interior walls, bathroom exhaust fans that terminated in the attic allowing in hot humid air that was causing mold growth, and finally gable vents in the attic that had been covered up by the previous homeowner.

Nothing we can't handle! Comfenergy to the rescue once again!!

Look at the gaps on the top plates of these walls. I was actually able to slide a penny between the drywall and the wood framing and drop it into the wall cavity.

Bare spots showing drywall..This shows up as hot/cold spots with thermal imaging from below.

Big gaps and bare spots around HVAC duct work.

This bath fan exhaust line had been dumping hot, humid air into the attic for years, causing mold growth. Major issue!!!

The previous homeowner had covered the gable vents of the attic, most likely to keep the wind from whipping through the attic and down those air gaps into the rooms below. Bad idea!
