Cantilevers - The Forgotten Spots

A cantilevered floor is a floor that sticks out past the foundation or supporting wall below. It may be a first- or second-story bump-out, a bay window, or a room over an open porch. This building detail lets outside air leak inside your house and can be the cause of your uncomfortable rooms. Not only can it create cold floors/ceilings, draftiness, and uneven temperatures throughout your home, but it can also increase your energy bills.

In the winter, cold air leaks into your overhang, up into the floor cavity, and all the way through your floor to the other side of your house, making your downstairs ceilings cold and your upstairs floors cold. Your furnace now has to work twice as hard to heat your home, if it can even keep up at all. The same thing happens in the summer, except its hot and humid air traveling through your floors.

At Comfenergy, we offer multiple solutions to solve this issue and stop the air infiltration. We can use dense packed cellulose, SilverGlo foam boards, spray foam, or a combination of these products. The result is increased comfort, warmer floors and ceilings, less drafts, a quieter home, and lower energy bills.
