Comfenergy Case Studies: Ashburn Town House Condensation

Challenge

The customer in Ashburn, VA had sweaty ducts that were dripping water onto the drywall in her basement family room, staining and ruining the drywall.  The issue was that the space over her adjacent garage was open to the space above her family room.  When the warm moist air from outside met the cold metal duct work.....it rained. 

Solution

We found a way to block the air from both the exterior wall and the interior wall that separated the garage from the Family Room.  We used SilverGlo foam blocks to create an air barrier between these two rooms.  Most of the town homes in Ashburn have this same construction detail.  In the winter it leads to cold floors on the second floor, and in the summer the potential for sweaty duct work.  A little ingenuity and we found the problem.  The customer reports that the sweating problems stopped the night we completed our work.
