This Great Falls, VA homeowner had issues with cold convective loops in his large cathedral family room.
A convective loop is when heated air rises, hits a cold surface like drywall against cold attic air, and that air then cools off and drops. This looping of air movement gave them cold drafts in their family room, which were thought to be the windows. This was discovered after a full comfort evaluation by the Comfenergy representative using thermal cameras and smoke puffers to literally see the air moving.
In this case, the homeowner was given two options and they chose closed cell spray foam insulation to solve the convective looping.
